Widener Law Delaware campus sends team to mock trial competition final

A three-person team from Widener Law's Delaware campus was the finalist in the 51st annual Academy of Trial Lawyers Mock Trial Comp The event, at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Pittsburgh, occurred between Feb. 19 and 21. Students Caroline Donato and Jon Landua argued the defense side of the civil trial involving negligence and wrongful death claims stemming from a fatal accident between a motorcycle and a truck. Area Students Help Widener University Win Inaugural Chemistry Wars

Widener University's Chemistry Club has captured first prize in Chemistry Wars 2014 co-hosted by Temple University and the University of the Sciences. This inaugural competition pitted students from seven area institutions against one another in relay races and challenges that tested their knowledge of chemistry and their ability to work together as a team. Local Widener University students travel to the Netherlands for EuroSim 2014, a simulation of the EU governing process

Six Widener University students attended EuroSim 2014, a four-day simulation event of the European Union. This year's EuroSim was held at the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands. EuroSim is the only simulation of its kind in the U.S. to involve European students. Host sites alternate each year between European and U.S. institutions. At EuroSim, students simulate the governing process of the EU, tackling a different topic each year that is predetermined by the conference's faculty advisers. Students come into the conference with assigned roles and must act in accordance with those roles throughout the event's proceedings. Widener University Students Study Environmental Sustainability in Costa Rica

Ten Widener University students spent part of the winter break studying abroad in Costa Rica as part of the Special Topics in Sustainability Science course offered through the College of Arts and Sciences. The trip was designed to introduce students to unique sustainable development projects that have a significant economic and social impact on villagers and farmers who harness biological resources for a living. The following students traveled to Alajuela and Ostinonal during the eleven-day service learning trip to Costa Rica:

Widener University Announces Winners of Third Annual High School Leadership Awards

Widener University, one of the nation's premier universities for civic engagement and applied leadership, in partnership with WCAU-TV NBC10, today announced the winners of the Widener University High School Leadership Awards. In its third year, the program recognized 134 students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrate courage and leadership within their communities. Students were selected for their abilities to stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools. Among the winners selected, the Widener University High School Leadership Awards recognized students who: aEUR? Coordinated fundraising efforts to benefit a horse farm that provides a day program to adults with developmental disabilities aEUR? Founded a group that promotes safe teen driving and raises awareness about the dangers of distracted driving aEUR? Traveled to Haiti to live with local families and help construct schools for small Haitian towns aEUR? Raised and trained guide dogs to serve the blind "The turnout of nominations this year was remarkable and the level of civic engagement among the winners is truly inspiring," said Widener University President James T. Harris III. "Our mission at Widener is deeply rooted in service, leadership and community, making this program extremely special to the university. The winners are the next generation of leaders in our area and I look forward to personally meeting all of them at the awards ceremony." Winners are invited to a celebratory breakfast at the National Constitution Center on March 20, as well as a leadership conference at Widener University in fall 2014. Most notably, winners will receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years should they enroll at Widener University for undergraduate studies. Winners include:

Widener Law graduates become members of Pennsylvania Bar

Some of the region's best and brightest new attorneys took their oaths and became full-fledged members of the Pennsylvania bar recently at the Judge Charles P. Mirarchi Jr. Pennsylvania Bar Induction Ceremony organized for graduates of Widener Law. The school celebrates the induction as a point of pride with special Widener-only events, where alumni assemble to take their oaths alongside friends they made during their years of study. The Office of Development and Alumni Relations coordinates the ceremonies, which are held in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pa. The 24 new attorneys sworn at City Hall in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Dec. 4 heard remarks from Judge Paul P. Panepinto '76 of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Civil Trial Division. Other remarks were made by Judge George W. Overton '86 of the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas Civil Trial Division, Supervising Judge Margaret T. Murphy, '77, of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Domestic Relations Division and Judge Joel S. Johnson, '91 of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Family Division. Widener Law Dean Linda L. Ammons also attended. "Witnessing the swearing-in of our graduates is a highlight of my role as dean," Ammons said. Area Students Chosen for Select Leadership Program at Widener University

Widener University has chosen 12 undergraduate students to participate in the highly selective Oskin Leaders Program. Students in the program receive leadership training and one-on-one coaching that guides them through identifying and developing a leadership project. The program is administered by the Oskin Leadership Institute at Widener. To be selected for the program, students need to demonstrate leadership potential, energy and passion, a commitment to learning and growing, the spirit of a trailblazer, and a commitment to the concept of a team. Widener University Freshmen Selected for Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leader Program

Fifteen incoming freshmen at Widener University have been selected for the Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leaders Program. Select freshmen are chosen each year for the Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leader Program based on their high school academic record, commitment to serving their communities, and leadership potential. Students in the program volunteer 300 hours of service with a community partner in the city of Chester each year, and commit to an annual international service trip for alternative spring break. In addition, students participate in training and enrichment activities that help them develop leadership skills. The following incoming freshmen from the area were selected this year:
