Vy To of Chester / Ho Chi Minh City Participated in a Cultural Immersion with Widener University in Miami

2014 Mar 28

Last year, Widener University introduced two Cultural Immersion trips. Sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, the cultural immersion trips give students an eye-opening perspective on cultures and issues while they perform service activities.

A trip to Miami to explore the immigration issues was hosted by the Office for Multicultural Student Affairs and a trip to West Virginia to study issues related to Mountaintop Mining Removal was hosted by the Outdoor Adventure Club. The university offered these trips to students once again this year in addition to a new Atlanta trip, which was for international students.

Vy To of Chester / Ho Chi Minh City, a Senior Economics major, recently returned from a Cultural Immersion trip in Miami.

The Office for Multicultural Student Affairs led the trip to Miami, where students gained an understanding of the complexity of the tensions between ethnic groups and varying classes by working side-by-side with immigrants and others who are in need of compassion and empathy.

The Office of International Student Services, took a select group of international students to Atlanta for a new cultural immersion based on the civil rights movement. The Outdoor Adventure Club led an excursion to the Appalachia region of West Virginia, where students studied the culture, the environment, and economy in the region.
