Sarah Gensel of Woodstown Receives Funding for Clinton Global Initiative Research

2015 Feb 2

Sarah Gensel of Woodstown, N.J., is among five Widener University students who have received funding from the university in association with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to conduct research to help develop solutions to pressing global challenges. The Office of the President at Widener awarded nearly $10,000 to students for CGI-related research.

Gensel, a senior environmental science student at Widener, is conducting a habitat assessment for endangered species threatened by natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania.

As a member of the CGI University Network, Widener students are invited to develop a Commitment to Action, a new, specific and measurable plan that addresses an issue at Widener, in their local community or around the world. The plan must relate to one of five focus areas: education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation, or public health.

"The research projects chosen for funding address several of the focus areas identified by the Clinton Global Initiative," said Suk-Chung Yoon, associate provost for experiential learning and global engagement at Widener. "The research demonstrates the deep commitment Widener students have to addressing these issues and taking action to help make the world a better place."

Student will deliver an interim report on the progress of their research this month, and at least one of the students will be selected by the university to attend the annual CGI University meeting in Miami, Fla. in March.
