Daniel Garman of Yardley, Pa. Named to Army ROTC Dauntless Battalion Ranger Challenge Team

2015 Nov 6

Daniel Garman of Yardley, Pa., a civil engineering major at Widener University, was part of a nine-member Army ROTC Dauntless Battalion team that recently competed in the ROTC Ranger Challenge at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.

The team competed against 17 other ROTC teams from throughout the region in a gauntlet of events including orienteering, road march, one-rope bridge, a physical fitness test, and the Commander's event. Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Curtis served as coach for the Dauntless Battalion team.

The Ranger Challenge is designed for students who wish to challenge themselves beyond the expectations set for average cadets. Students who participate in the Ranger Challenge are willing to push themselves farther, harder and faster than other cadets.

To make the team, cadets are subjected to a grueling series of assessments that include an Army physical fitness test, a Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test, countless ruck marches, numerous physical training sessions, and skill-based training that includes weapons training and rope bridge practices.

Widener is the home of the Army ROTC Dauntless Battalion, one of the largest Army ROTC battalions in the northeast region. The Dauntless Battalion includes cadets from Widener, West Chester University, Villanova University, Neumann University, Penn State-Abington and Penn State-Brandywine.
