Belkys Sanchez of Newark Travels to Amsterdam with Widener University's School of Human Service Professions

2014 Jun 19

Belkys Sanchez of Newark, DE, a graduate student in Widener University's School of Human Service Professions, recently took part in the school's annual interdisciplinary trip abroad. This year's group traveled to Amsterdam, a popular destination for the international trip given its positive sexual health outcomes.

"The Netherlands has the lowest rate of teen pregnancy in the world and ranks among the lowest for STDs and sexual assault and rape," said Dr. Betsy Crane, who led this year's trip. "That is one of the main reasons why we return to Amsterdam. We want to learn from what they are doing."

The trip itinerary included academic site visits to the University of Amsterdam Medical Center, the Gender Clinic at Vrije Universiteit, a psychiatry museum in Haarlem where Dr. Rens Filius spoke about mental health care in the Netherlands and a presentation at the Prostitute Information Center with a tour of the Red Light district.
